Brachiopods Brachiopods are marine animals that live on the seafloor. They are bivalves, meaning they have soft bodies that are protected by two shells. The shells are hinged so they can open during feeding. During the Ordovician, brachiopods were one of the most common marine animals; there were approximately 30,000 species. Today, they are rare and there are only around 300 different species. All of the brachiopods displayed here were collected in Ohio and lived approximately 460 million year ago.
